In 1969, dare devil U.S. Army pilots and their crew flew "unarmed and unafraid" in the Vietnam War in an aircraft that earned tits name the "widow maker." This is their story of beating the odds.
Most films about the Vietnam War focus on the war’s aftermath in personal loss and hardship to Vietnam Veterans as a result of their role and engagement in the war and their civilian integration back into American society. With April 30, 2020, marking the 45th anniversary of the official end to the Vietnam War, this documentary honors and showcases ten men of the 244th Aviation Company that served in this war. These men served in the 244th at the same time—working and surviving together in a place called Cần Thơ Army Airfield, Republic of Vietnam.
Their stories are not steeped in despair, depression, or self-inflicted isolation. You will learn that these individuals journeyed different paths—all successful and very diversified. From career military officers to corporate executives to business entrepreneurs, their stories give hope and light to a chapter of American history that is oftentimes portrayed as hopeless and dark. Even though they went their separate ways after they left Vietnam—some crossed paths, some stayed in touch, but as a group, they all reconnected decades later (mid 1990’s) at a dinner gathering in Washington, DC. That night, this group of Vietnam Veterans, made a commitment to reconnect every year from that day forward. Ever since, they have shared and continue to share their lives with one another. Each year at their annual reunions, they reminisce about their time at Cần Thơ, the 244th and share long forgotten stories about their Vietnam War experience.
